IMU Sensor MM5.10

A 5 degree-of-freedom inertial measurement unit combining three linear accelerometers and two rotational rate sensors in one compact housing, streaming vehicle dynamics data over a 1 Mbaud CAN bus.

Overview

What Is It

Five channels of vehicle dynamics data from one MEMS sensing package.

The MM5.10 combines a 3-axis accelerometer with a 2-axis rotation rate sensor, reading yaw rate, roll rate, and X, Y, and Z acceleration from a single housing. Both measurement types come from MEMS (micro-electromechanical) elements connected to an integrated circuit. Rotational acceleration around the sensing elements generates a Coriolis force that changes the internal capacitance of the micromachined structure, which the sensor reads as rotation rate. A separate, purely surface-micromachined element reads linear acceleration across all three axes. Together, that combination gives a precise picture of how a vehicle is actually moving, not just where it's pointed.

All five channels stream out over a single CAN connection at up to 1 Mbaud, so one sensor and one cable run gets a logger, ECU, or chassis control system everything it needs for vehicle dynamics work.

Key Features at a Glance

5 Degrees of Freedom

Yaw rate, roll rate, and X/Y/Z acceleration from one sensor package, no separate gyro and accelerometer to install and align.

1 Mbaud CAN Output

Selectable 1 Mbaud or 500 kbaud CAN, fast enough to keep up with real-time chassis control as well as data logging.

Selectable Filtering

Low-pass filtering selectable at 15, 30, or 60 Hz, so you can tune bandwidth to your application.

Compact, Lightweight

1.2 oz (35 g) without wire in an 80 x 56 x 21 mm housing, small enough to package almost anywhere on the vehicle.

Fine Resolution

0.1°/s resolution on rotation rate and 0.01 g resolution on acceleration, with over-range limits well beyond the rated measuring range.

Three Lead Options

Available without wire, with a flying lead, or terminated in a motorsport connector, in lead lengths from 15 to 100 cm.

Capabilities Beyond Motorsport

The MM5.10 was built to a motorsport spec, but precise, high-rate vehicle dynamics data is just as valuable off the track. We've supplied this sensor for use outside of racing as well, including on defense ground vehicles and in autonomous vehicle development. Its combination of accurate yaw and roll rate with 3-axis acceleration, a fast CAN output, and a small, rugged package makes it a fit anywhere a vehicle, robot, or platform needs to know precisely how it's moving, whether that's for stability control, navigation and dead-reckoning support, or vehicle dynamics research.

Lead & Connector Options

Available in three termination options. If ordering the flying lead or motorsport connector version, specify a lead length from 15 to 100 cm in your order notes.

Option Order number Best for
No wire F02U.V01.511-02 Building your own harness from the sensor's fixed connector
Flying lead (open end) F02U.V01.511-91 Direct splice or custom termination, lead length 15 to 100 cm
Motorsport connector F02U.V01.512-03 Plug-and-play install with a factory-terminated motorsport connector, lead length 15 to 100 cm

Building the Harness Side?

If you've ordered the no-wire or fixed-connector version, we stock the matching mating connector kit, including housing and four female contacts with seals.

Looking Ahead: The MM7.10

Bosch is transitioning this sensor family toward the newer MM7.10, which adds a third rotational axis (pitch rate) for full 6 degree-of-freedom sensing. The MM5.10 remains available and fully supported today, but if you're speccing a new build, it's worth a look at where the platform is headed.

Before You Install

Installation Notes

  • Connects directly to most control units and data logging systems.
  • Avoid abrupt temperature changes.
  • Mount using only the sensor's integrated fixing holes.
  • Keep the sensor within its rated environmental specifications at all times.
  • Include the calibration sheet with your order placement, and reference the offer drawing for further application details.
  • Not intended for safety-related applications without appropriate signal validation in the system it feeds.
FAQ

Common Questions

What does the MM5.10 actually measure?

Five channels: yaw rate, roll rate, and acceleration on the X, Y, and Z axes. It does not measure pitch rate, that channel is what the newer MM7.10 adds.

Which lead option should I order?

Order the motorsport connector version for a plug-and-play install, the flying lead if you're splicing directly into your own harness, or the no-wire version if you're terminating the sensor's fixed connector yourself. If ordering the flying lead or motorsport connector, include your desired lead length, 15 to 100 cm, in the order notes.

Is this only for race cars?

No. While it's built to a motorsport specification, the MM5.10 is also used outside racing, including on defense ground vehicles and in autonomous vehicle development, anywhere a platform needs accurate, high-rate vehicle dynamics data.

Is the MM5.10 being discontinued?

Bosch is transitioning this sensor family toward the newer MM7.10, which adds a third rotational axis. The MM5.10 remains available and fully supported, but new builds may want to consider the MM7.10.
