Overview

What Is It

Six channels of vehicle dynamics data, roll, pitch, and yaw rate plus X, Y, and Z acceleration, from one MEMS sensing package.

The MM7.10 combines a 3-axis accelerometer with a full 3-axis rotation rate sensor, reading roll rate, pitch rate, yaw rate, and X, Y, and Z acceleration from a single housing. Both measurement types come from MEMS (micro-electromechanical) elements connected to an integrated circuit. Rotational acceleration around the sensing elements generates a Coriolis force that changes the internal capacitance of the micromachined structure, which the sensor reads as rotation rate. A separate, purely surface-micromachined element reads linear acceleration across all three axes. Together, that combination gives a complete, six degree-of-freedom picture of how a vehicle is actually moving through space.

All six channels stream out over a single CAN connection at up to 1 Mbaud, so one sensor and one cable run gets a logger, ECU, or chassis control system everything it needs for full vehicle dynamics work, including the pitch axis a 5-DOF sensor can't see.

The Successor to the MM5.10

The MM7.10 is Bosch's next-generation IMU, adding a third rotational axis, pitch rate, on top of everything the MM5.10 measures. Same mounting footprint and connector family, same CAN architecture, with a complete 6-DOF picture instead of 5. Capabilities Beyond Motorsport

The MM7.10 was built to a motorsport spec, but full 6-DOF vehicle dynamics data at a fast CAN refresh rate is just as valuable off the track. We've supplied the MM-series sensors for use outside of racing as well, including on defense ground vehicles and in autonomous vehicle development. A complete picture of roll, pitch, and yaw rate alongside 3-axis acceleration, in a small, rugged, CAN-native package, is a fit anywhere a vehicle, robot, or platform needs to know precisely how it's moving, whether that's for stability control, navigation and dead-reckoning support, or vehicle dynamics research.

The open-end version uses color-coded wire: red for UBat, blue for Gnd, white (shielded) for CANH, and light blue (shielded) for CANL.

CAN Bus Configuration Note

CAN ID 04 (0x7DC), plus RX1 (0x7DF) and RX2 (0x7D4), are reserved for sensor configuration (SYNC). Make sure none of those three IDs are used elsewhere on your CAN network, or you'll get conflicts with the MM7.10's own configuration traffic. A CAN DBC file and information on which standards the sensor has been considered against are both available from Bosch on request.

Before You Install

Installation Notes

  • Do not mount the sensor with the connector pointing upward. Beyond that, Bosch places no restriction on mounting orientation.
  • Align the sensor's coordinate system to the vehicle's coordinate system where possible, most systems expect that orientation and it avoids a mathematical transformation later.
  • Connects directly to most control units and data logging systems.
  • Avoid abrupt temperature changes.
  • Mount using only the sensor's integrated fixing holes.
  • Keep the sensor within its rated environmental specifications at all times.
  • Include the calibration sheet with your order placement, and reference the offer drawing for further application details.
  • Not intended for safety-related applications without appropriate signal validation in the system it feeds.

Common Questions

What's the difference between the MM7.10 and the MM5.10?

The MM7.10 adds a third rotational axis, pitch rate, giving full 6 degree-of-freedom sensing instead of the MM5.10's 5. It also has a higher acceleration over-range limit (±20 g versus ±10 g) and a slightly taller housing to fit the added axis.

Which lead option should I order?

Order the motorsport connector version for a plug-and-play install, the open-end wire if you're splicing directly into your own harness, or the production-type connector version if you're terminating the sensor's fixed AMP connector yourself. If ordering the motorsport connector or open-end wire, include your desired lead length, 15 to 100 cm, in the order notes.

How should I orient the sensor when mounting it?

The only hard rule is that the connector cannot point upward. Beyond that, any orientation is acceptable, though Bosch recommends aligning the sensor's coordinate system to your vehicle's coordinate system so you don't need a mathematical transformation later.

Is this only for race cars?

No. While it's built to a motorsport specification, the MM7.10 is also used outside racing, including on defense ground vehicles and in autonomous vehicle development, anywhere a platform needs a complete, high-rate picture of vehicle dynamics.

Do I need to reserve any CAN IDs for this sensor?

Yes. CAN ID 04 (0x7DC), RX1 (0x7DF), and RX2 (0x7D4) are reserved for the sensor's own configuration traffic and must not be used by any other device on your CAN network.
