PSS Fluid Pressure Sensor

A high accuracy absolute pressure sensor for fuel, oil, transmission, and brake fluid, built on Bosch's thin film measuring cell and available in three ranges to match your application.

Overview

What Is It

The PSS is a compact absolute pressure sensor originally developed for gasoline direct injection rail pressure, and just as at home reading fuel, oil, transmission, or brake fluid pressure anywhere on a race car.

Inside the housing, a thin film measuring cell with a piezoresistive bridge is hermetically welded to a stainless steel pressure port. That construction is what gives the PSS its combination of high accuracy, a wide usable measurement range, and the durability to survive life in an engine bay or gearbox tunnel. An internal reference keeps the reading independent of ambient pressure, so the output tracks the fluid itself rather than the weather.

Because the sensing element and housing are shared across the range, the PSS is offered in three full scale ranges so you can match the sensor to the circuit instead of over- or under-ranging a single part across every application. All three share the same mounting thread, connector, and wiring, so swapping ranges on a future build does not mean re-engineering the loom.

Key Features at a Glance

Three Ranges, One Design

Available in 140, 260, and 420 bar (2,030 / 3,771 / 6,092 psi) full scale, sharing the same body, thread, and connector.

2 ms Response Time

Fast enough to follow rail pressure and hydraulic transients, not just steady-state readings.

Thin Film Measuring Cell

A piezoresistive bridge hermetically welded into a stainless steel port for high accuracy and long-term stability.

Multi-Fluid Compatible

Rated for gasoline, diesel, engine oil, transmission oil, and brake fluid, so one part number covers several circuits.

-40 to 266°F Operating Range

Rated -40 to 266°F (-40 to 130°C), with brief excursions to 284°F (140°C), and built-in overvoltage, reverse polarity, and short circuit protection.

Any Mounting Orientation

M10 x 1 thread with a sealed cone seat, rated for any mounting orientation on the car.

Choose Your Range

PSS-140 vs PSS-260 vs PSS-420

All three share the same mechanical, electrical, and connector specs below. Pick the range that fits the circuit you are measuring, with some headroom above your expected peak pressure.

Spec PSS-140 PSS-260 PSS-420
Application range 0 to 140 bar (0 to 2,030 psi) 0 to 260 bar (0 to 3,771 psi) 0 to 420 bar (0 to 6,092 psi)
Max. pressure 180 bar (2,611 psi) 320 bar (4,641 psi) 560 bar (8,122 psi)
Sensitivity at US = 5V 28.57 mV/bar (1.97 mV/psi) 15.38 mV/bar (1.06 mV/psi) 9.52 mV/bar (0.66 mV/psi)
Bosch order number 0261.545.053 0261.545.040 0261.545.136

Pressure reference type is absolute on all three ranges.

Installation Notes

  • Connects directly to most control units. Consider a TCI for the electrical connection where required.
  • Do not mount the sensor directly to the engine block. Vibration transmitted straight from the block can affect long-term reliability.
  • Any mounting orientation is acceptable.
  • An offset adapter, Bosch part number F02U.002.711-01, is available directly from Bosch if your installation needs it. Contact us if you would like help sourcing one.
  • Not intended for safety-related applications without appropriate signal validation measures in the system it feeds.
FAQ

Common Questions

Which PSS range do I need?

Pick a full scale range that comfortably covers your expected peak pressure with some margin, rather than the tightest possible fit. Direct injection fuel rail pressure often lands in the 260 or 420 bar range depending on the engine, while oil, transmission, and brake circuits are frequently well served by the 140 bar version. If you are not sure what your circuit sees at peak, reach out and we can help you size it.

Can the PSS measure fluids other than fuel?

Yes. Although it was developed for gasoline direct injection rail pressure, Bosch rates the PSS for diesel, engine oil, transmission oil, and brake fluid as well, using the same part.

Does the sensor come with the mating connector?

No, the sensor and connector are sold separately. All PSS ranges use the same Bosch Compact 3-pole connector, part number D261.205.366-01, which we stock.

Is the PSS reading absolute or gauge pressure?

Absolute. The internal reference means the output is independent of ambient (barometric) pressure, so you are reading true fluid pressure rather than pressure relative to atmosphere.

Can I mount the sensor in any orientation?

Yes, Bosch rates the PSS for any mounting orientation. The main installation guidance is to avoid mounting it directly to the engine block, since that transmits more vibration into the sensor than a chassis or bracket mount.
