What Is It

Part number 0258.988.001, Bosch's motorsport-grade build of the industry-standard LSU 4.9 wideband sensing element.

The LSU 4.9 is a planar ZrO2 dual-cell limiting current sensor with an integrated heater, reading exhaust oxygen content across the full lambda 0.65 to air range. That monotonic output makes it equally useful as a stoichiometric lambda 1 sensor and as a true wideband sensor for rich and lean tuning, which is why it has become the de facto standard wideband element behind most modern engine management and standalone wideband systems.

This specific part, 0258.988.001, is Bosch's motorsport-durability build of that same LSU 4.9 sensing technology. It was originally developed for NASCAR competition, where sensors see sustained high vibration and heat cycling that shortens the life of a standard automotive-grade unit. What Do You Run It With

The LSU 4.9 doesn't output a usable signal on its own. It needs a controller with the matching LSU-IC to drive the heater, pump the Nernst cell, and turn that into a lambda value.

Bosch's own Lambdatronic LT2 Sport and LT4 are purpose-built for this, supplying and reading up to two or four Bosch lambda sensors with CAN and analog output. Outside of the Bosch ecosystem, the LSU 4.9 is also the wideband element behind the wideband inputs on most modern standalone ECUs and dedicated wideband controllers, including systems from Haltech, Link, MoTeC, AEM, ECUMaster, and Innovate, among others. Before You Install

Installation Notes

  • Mount where the exhaust gas sample is representative and does not exceed the sensor's maximum permissible temperature. Hotter is generally better for response, within that limit.
  • Install as close to vertical as possible, wire end up, to help shed condensation.
  • Keep the sensor away from the exhaust outlet so outside air doesn't skew the reading.
  • The exhaust passage opposite the sensor must be leak-free to avoid false lean readings from leak-air.
  • Do not paint, wax, or otherwise treat the sensor body. Use only the recommended anti-seize on the thread.
  • Not intended for safety-related applications without appropriate signal validation in the system it feeds.

Common Questions

Is this the same sensor as Bosch part 0258.017.025?

It uses the same LSU 4.9 wideband sensing element and the same automotive-style connector as 0258.017.025, Bosch's standard production LSU 4.9. This part, 0258.988.001, is Bosch's motorsport-durability build of that sensor, with enhanced resistance to vibration and heat and an 80 cm lead. We stock 0258.988.001 rather than the standard part.

What controller or ECU do I need to run this sensor?

You need a controller built around an LSU-IC, such as a Bosch Lambdatronic LT2 Sport or LT4, or a standalone ECU or wideband controller with LSU 4.9 support, which covers most modern systems from Haltech, Link, MoTeC, AEM, ECUMaster, and Innovate. Check your controller's documentation for LSU 4.9 or LSU-IC support if you're not sure.

Can I use this on a chassis dyno or engine dyno?

Yes. The LSU 4.9 is widely used for dyno tuning as well as in-car installs, provided your dyno's AFR system or wideband controller supports the LSU 4.9.

How is this different from the IMSA Lambda Sensor LSU 4.9?

Both use the same LSU 4.9 sensing element. The IMSA version is supplied specifically for IMSA WeatherTech Championship scrutineering requirements. If you don't compete in that series, this standard listing is the one you want.

Does this sensor come with the mating connector?

The sensor ships with its own connector attached. If you're building or repairing the harness side, we stock the matching 6-way mating connector kit separately.
