Lambdatronic LT4

A four-channel lambda controller that drives Bosch's own LSU-IC to read up to four wideband oxygen sensors at once, delivering lab-grade air/fuel ratio data over CAN or analog in a box small enough to mount anywhere on the car, the bench, or the test cell.

Overview

What Is It

A compact four-channel controller built around Bosch's own lambda IC.

The LT4 supplies controlled pumping current to up to four Bosch LSU 4.2, LSU 4.9, or Mini-LSU 4.9 wideband sensors at once, and turns each one's raw signal into a usable lambda value. Inside each LSU sensor is a Nernst cell and a pump cell. The controller holds the Nernst cell at a fixed reference lambda of 1.013 regardless of what's actually in the exhaust, by driving a current through the pump cell to compensate. That pump current is directly proportional to the real oxygen content of the gas, so measuring it is what gives you an accurate lambda reading across the sensor's full range, not just at stoichiometric.

Every channel gets internal heater control with voltage compensation, so sensor temperature stays correct as supply voltage varies. Lambda value, sensor temperature, and diagnostics are all available over CAN, and the analog outputs can be configured freely if your ECU, dash, or data system reads voltage instead.

Key Features at a Glance

Four Independent Channels

Drives up to four LSU 4.2, LSU 4.9, or Mini-LSU 4.9 sensors simultaneously, each with its own heater control and pump current loop.

CAN and Analog Output

Lambda, sensor temperature, and diagnostics stream over CAN at 500 kbaud or 1 Mbaud, with four freely configurable 0 to 5 V analog outputs alongside it.

100 Hz Sampling

Signal sampling and CAN refresh both run at 100 Hz, with a signal resolution of 0.00025 lambda per channel.

Compact, Sealed Housing

A 54 x 59 x 13 mm (2.1 x 2.3 x 0.5 in) box, 100% humidity sealed, mounted with Velcro rather than hard points.

Miss-Pinning Protected

The connector is keyed against incorrect pinning, and the unit includes built-in heater voltage compensation across the supply range.

Included Configuration Software

Ships configured with Bosch's Modas Sport software, included with the unit, for setup and calibration.

Not Just for the Race Track

The LT4 was built to a motorsport specification, but the same combination of a lab-grade Bosch lambda IC in a compact, sealed, vibration-rated package makes it a useful precision air/fuel ratio instrument anywhere a business needs accurate wideband data outside of a passenger-car emissions system. We've supplied this unit to commercial and industrial customers as well as race teams, across industries including oil and gas field equipment, industrial gearbox and drivetrain test benches, heavy-duty and hybrid truck powertrain development, and agricultural and construction equipment engine development.

If you're evaluating the LT4 for an industrial, off-highway, or R&D application outside motorsport, our team can help you confirm it fits your combustion research, engine development, or test cell setup.

Sensors

Which Sensors Does It Run

The LT4 supplies and reads any combination of these three LSU sensor types across its four channels.

Sensor Notes
LSU 4.9 The standard, most widely used LSU sensor across current builds
Mini-LSU 4.9 Smaller M16 x 1.5 thread and lighter Inconel housing for weight- and space-critical installs. Not stocked online, contact us to special order
LSU 4.2 Previous-generation sensor, still supported by the LT4

The LT4 is a different ecosystem from the newer LSU ADV sensor, which requires the LT4 ADV controller instead.

Installation Notes

  • Keep sensor-to-LT4 cable runs to 1.5 m (59 in) or less to avoid signal errors.
  • The connector is keyed against miss-pinning, so it can only be mated correctly.
  • Reference ground (GND_REF) must connect to either your measuring device or system ground, and the offset between GND and GND_REF must not exceed 2 V.
  • The unit can connect to any CAN system running 500 kbaud or 1 Mbaud, alongside its analog outputs.
  • Configuration and calibration is handled through Bosch's Modas Sport software, included with the unit. Consult the LT4 function sheet for full CAN protocol documentation.
FAQ

Common Questions

How many sensors can one LT4 run?

Up to four, in any combination of LSU 4.2, LSU 4.9, or Mini-LSU 4.9 sensors, each on its own independent channel.

Can I use this outside of motorsport?

Yes. While it's built to a motorsport specification, the LT4 is a precision wideband lambda instrument that's also used in commercial and industrial settings such as combustion research, engine development, and test cell work, across industries like oil and gas equipment, industrial drivetrain testing, heavy-duty and hybrid truck powertrain development, and agricultural and construction equipment.

Does it output CAN, analog, or both?

Both. Lambda, sensor temperature, and diagnostics are available over CAN at 500 kbaud or 1 Mbaud, and the unit also provides four freely configurable 0 to 5 V analog outputs.

What software do I need to configure it?

Bosch's Modas Sport software, which is included with the unit, handles configuration and calibration.

Is this the same controller I need for the LSU ADV sensor?

No. The LSU ADV is a separate sensor ecosystem that requires the Lambdatronic LT4 ADV controller instead of the standard LT4.
