Bosch Motorsport M5 ABS: What do the 11 settings actually do?

If you've spent any time looking at a Bosch Motorsport M5 ABS system, you've probably noticed the rotary switch with 11 numbered positions, plus an OFF position. And if you're like most people looking at it for the first time, the question is pretty simple:

What do all 11 settings actually do?

It's a fair question, and honestly one of the most common ones we get asked at the counter. Bosch hands you a knob numbered 1 through 11 with no labels for "wet," "dry," "slicks" or "race." So what happens when you turn it?

A quick note before we get into it: the Bosch Motorsport M5 is built and calibrated for motorsport use, in cars set up for club racing, time attack, and dedicated track day duty. Everything below assumes that context.

As an Authorized Bosch Motorsport ABS Dealer, we've set up M5 systems on a pretty wide range of cars, from factory GT3 and Porsche Cup cars to Pikes Peak hill climb builds, endurance racers, time attack cars, and resto-mod projects, and just about everything in between. That range is actually the point of this article. The same 11 settings that work on a Cup car also work on a Pikes Peak special or a resto-mod build, because the maps are calibrated to the car, not the other way around.

First, what is the ABS actually trying to do?

Most people assume ABS has one job: keep the wheels from locking up. That's true, but it undersells what's actually happening.

A tire produces its maximum braking force at a certain amount of slip, not at zero slip. The wheel doesn't need to be turning at exactly the same speed as the car to generate the most stopping power. The goal of a good motorsport ABS system isn't to eliminate slip entirely. It's to keep each tire working in the slip range where it's producing the most usable braking force.

That's why the M5 is constantly watching all four corners of the car rather than simply waiting for a wheel to lock. It pulls in data from four wheel-speed sensors, front and rear brake pressure sensors, and the car's longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration, and yaw rate. It uses all of that to control brake pressure independently at each wheel, many times per second, while you're standing on the pedal.

You don't have to think about which wheel is about to lock. You just brake as hard as you can and get the car turned.

The 11 Settings - In plain English

The easiest way to think about the 11 positions is as a range from conservative to aggressive. Bosch identifies Position 1 as the most sensitive setting, with heavy rain as an example. As you move toward Position 11, the system allows progressively more wheel slip before it intervenes.

Position 11 is the most aggressive setting on the standard range, but that doesn't automatically make it the fastest. Bosch is clear that the optimal setting depends on the car, the tires, and the conditions, and in our own experience helping customers dial in their systems, that's held true across nearly every car we've worked on.

1 Most conservative. Heavy rain, very low grip. In short, "The track is terrible. Keep me out of trouble."
2 Very conservative wet-weather setting
3 Wet or low-grip conditions
4 Damp track or changing conditions
5 Mild to moderate intervention
6 Middle of the range. If you're learning how the system behaves, this is a useful starting point.
7 Dry conditions, moderately aggressive. This is where the M5 starts feeling very different from the ABS calibration most people are used to in a road car.

9 High-grip, aggressive driving
10 Very aggressive, allows more slip
11 Most aggressive setting

This isn't an official Bosch chart, since the exact behavior of each map depends on how the system has been calibrated for a given car. It's simply an easy way to picture the range. And that's the key point: these aren't 11 levels of "how much ABS." They're 11 distinct control maps.

Why would you want different maps?

Grip isn't constant. Neither is your track.

Picture an early morning session. The pavement is cold, your tires aren't fully up to temperature, and there's still some moisture on the surface. You want the ABS stepping in early to keep the tires from locking. A few hours later, the track has heated up, the tires are at operating temperature, and you're carrying a lot more grip into Turn 1. Now the tires can afford to work harder before the ABS needs to intervene.

Instead of running one calibration that has to work reasonably well everywhere, you can select the map that actually matches the conditions in front of you.

Calibrated around your car

A lightweight open-wheel car on slicks doesn't behave anything like a heavier GT-style car on a harder compound. Add aerodynamic downforce, different tire sizes, and different weight distribution, and the ideal ABS behavior shifts again.

This is one of the real advantages of the Bosch system: the M5 can be configured around the actual vehicle. Through Bosch's RaceABS software, you can enter details like vehicle weight, wheelbase, track width, individual wheel weights, and tire circumference. That gives the controller a much better understanding of the car it's managing, rather than applying a generic calibration and hoping it's close enough. It's also why we always recommend getting a car's baseline parameters entered correctly before ever worrying about which of the 11 settings to run.

What's the difference between the Clubsport and the Kit 1 or Kit 2?

With the higher-level M5 Kit 1 or Kit 2, calibration goes considerably further than what's available on the M5 Clubsport. Available features (customized by a Bosch engineer and not end-user adjustable) include:

  • Downforce-dependent wheel slip control
  • Lateral-acceleration-dependent slip control
  • Inside-wheel slip reduction while cornering
  • Tire circumference information over CAN
  • Vehicle-specific ABS map calibration

A car doesn't behave the same at 40 mph as it does at 140 mph. A car with real aerodynamic downforce has dramatically more available grip at speed than it does in the pits, and the ABS can be calibrated to account for that. That's a very different proposition than bolting on an aftermarket controller and picking between "street," "track," or "race."

Braking while cornering

This is where the system earns its keep. Picture approaching a corner at 100 mph, braking hard in a straight line, then turning in while still on the brakes. Now each tire is being asked to do two things at once: brake and corner. A tire only has so much grip available, and the more cornering force you ask of it, the less braking force it has left to give. At the same time, the outside tires are carrying far more load than the inside tires, so the four corners don't have the same amount of available braking grip.

Because the M5 can factor in lateral acceleration and yaw rate, it has far more information about what the car is actually doing than a system that's only watching wheel speed. That's a meaningful difference between a purpose-built motorsport ABS system and a standard road-going unit.

What the driver actually feels

None of this shows up in the cockpit as wheel-speed algorithms or hydraulic pressure math. You just turn the knob.

If the track is wet or you're on cold tires, you pick a more conservative setting. As the track dries out or the tires come in, you move toward a more aggressive map. Because you have multiple calibrated options available, you can experiment and find what actually works, rather than being stuck with a single compromise setting.

The goal isn't to find the highest number you can run. It's to find the setting that gives you the best combination of braking performance, stability, and confidence, lap after lap, as tire temperature, fuel load, and track conditions change.

Position 12: Off

The rotary switch has 12 positions for a reason. Position 12 disables the ABS function entirely. That's useful for testing, troubleshooting, or situations where certain competition rules require the system to be off. For everything else, the 1 through 11 range is where the M5's control maps live.

M5 Clubsport vs. M5 Kit 1 or Kit 2

Worth noting: not every M5 package has identical capability. The M5 Clubsport uses the same core ABS hardware as the Kit 1 or Kit 2, but Bosch offers additional calibration and integration options with the higher-level kits, along with a vehicle-specific wiring harness in place of the Clubsport's universal one. So, which setting should you run?

There's no universal answer, and that's actually the point of having 11 of them. If you're just getting started, experiment rather than assuming the highest number is best. Start conservative and work up as you get comfortable with the car and the system. Pay attention to how it actually behaves under heavy braking: Is it stable? Can you brake later? Does the car stay composed as you turn in? Can you consistently hit the same braking point?

Those questions matter a lot more than whether you're on Setting 8 or Setting 10. The fastest setting is the one that lets the tires do the most work while keeping the car predictable.

Is Setting 11 the best setting on the Bosch M5?

Not necessarily. Setting 11 is the most aggressive map, but Bosch notes that the optimal setting depends on the vehicle and conditions. A lower setting can actually produce better results depending on your tires, track, and weather.

Is Setting 1 meant for rain?

Bosch uses heavy rain as an example for Position 1 because it's the most sensitive setting. That said, the exact calibration of each map can be vehicle-specific.

Does Setting 11 mean the ABS is turned off?

No. Setting 11 is still an active ABS control map. The M5 has a separate Position 12 dedicated to turning the system off.

Can the Bosch M5 maps be customized for my car?

What happens at Position 12?

Position 12 disables the ABS function. The M5's 11-setting range covers active ABS control maps, with Position 12 available for deactivation.

Does the Bosch M5 make the car stop faster on its own?

A good ABS system helps you get closer to the tires' available grip, particularly in situations where a wheel would otherwise lock. It doesn't create additional grip. Its job is to help you use the grip your tires and car already have.
